Dr. Roger Taylor and I have crossed paths several times. I used Dr. Taylor’s creative curriculum units for gifted students years before I ever knew who he was.   I attended my first Roger Taylor presentation in Phoenix. My bucket list now includes participating in one of his week-long summer curriculum writing workshops.  Dr. Taylor was the originator of the phrase: “The teacher  as sage on the stage not guide on the side.” Wow! Here is the inspirational presenter you don’t forget – ADHD challenged, a guru of K-12 gifted-education, and an enthusiastic, humorous story teller  (…think: Robin Williams).

Who could not love him? Over the course of his 42-year career (36 in the classroom), Dr. Taylor has taught at every grade level K-12 at least one year. Currently, he teaches (pro bono) inner city gifted high school students in Chicago on Saturdays  and teacher curriculum writing workshops in the summer; his presentations have been heard around the world.  There’s more to his story if you’re interested.

This generous man likes to give away teacher-created curriculum units! Throughout the years I have been to four of Dr. Taylor’s seminars.  At his seminars attendees are given free Internet access to thousands of down loadable curriculum units. You will see on Dr. Taylor’s website free down loadable sample K-12 math, science, language arts, history, art, character development, life skills…  Help yourself!

In order for a unit to qualify for Dr. Taylor’s AHA stamp of approval, each must include all 8 of Gardener’s Multiple Intelligences, the 13 Principles of Learning from Pi Lambda Theta and the 6 levels of Torrance’s Divergent Thinking Skills.  In addition, the unit plans include Dr. Taylor’s own character ed/ ethics and 18 I-Search projects, one each based on Frank Williams’ Higher Order Thinking Skills (for gifted and talented students).  Don’t be fooled by the G&T thinking skills, these units provide rich learning for students of all abilities.

So what’s Dr. Taylor up to these days? …free webinars. Dr. Taylor’s webinars would be a valuable addition to our October JDS in-service day.  …and they are FREE!  Generous, inspirational, creative, prodigious and dynamic, in my mind “Rog”, as his colleagues call him, is an educational Rock Star!
