What is Design Thinking?

Part 1 introduces the design thinking concept. These clips appeared on Nightline 12 years ago and demonstrate collaborative, participatory, empathetic design thinking in action. (Yes, you read it correctly, empathy is part of the methodology!)  In the clips one team at the  international design firm,  IDEO uses design thinking to improve an old product.  The challenge presented by ABC News: Redesign a shopping cart in 5 days.

As you watch, think beyond designing a product and consider using the methods in design thinking to solve current school and social issues.  “Design Thinking for Educators: Part 2” will explain why design thinking, a creative approach to problem-solving, is an ideal 21st century process for today’s world.
